Trump honors football coach Holtz as ‘one of the greatest’

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Thursday called Lou Holtz “one of the greatest coaches in American history” as he honored the college football Hall of Famer and political ally with the nation’s highest civilian honor.

Holtz, whose 34-year coaching career included the 1988 national title at the University of Notre Dame, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom during an Oval Office ceremony. Holtz led six different programs to bowl games and is an outspoken Trump backer.

“He’s really a life teacher,” said Trump, noting the respect and loyalty Holtz earned from the many players he mentored. “He teaches people how to live and how to live properly and how to live with dignity.”

Holtz is one of several sports figures Trump has awarded the Medal of Freedom during his time office.

Others include former NFL Hall of Famer and Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page, Olympic track and

Position rankings for Week 13

SportsPulse: Week 12 was a nightmare for bettors. Lorenzo is here to provide an oasis and the three best bets for Week 13 in the NFL.

This is the final week of the regular season in most fantasy football leagues. It’s do or die time for those teams on the playoff bubble, so it’s even more important to get your best lineup in place. After a historic first quarter last week at Tampa Bay, expect Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and WR Tyreek Hill to once again be the top scorers at their positions when they host the Denver Broncos.

Fantasy football rankings for Week 13 are based on the point-per-reception (PPR) scoring used in most seasonal and daily fantasy football formats. One point is awarded for every 10 rushing and receiving yards and one point for every 20 passing yards. Six points are awarded for

College Football Playoff impact games include Clemson, Texas A&M,

SportsPulse: Dan Wolken reacts to the second College Football Playoff rankings and believes Ohio State can get into the playoff without qualifying for the Big Ten championship game given the committee’s track record.

It would take some truly wild happenings to alter the playoff picture at this late stage, but truly crazy happenings have been part and parcel in college football for decades.

Even bearing that in mind, No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Notre Dame aren’t likely to be knocked from their perches this weekend. The Crimson Tide’s once-anticipated date with LSU is now a mere footnote thanks to the Tigers’ 2020 tumble, and the Fighting Irish host 1-9 Syracuse in what amounts to a tune-up for the ACC title game in two weeks.

We’ll turn our attention to the quest for the remaining coveted spots among the top four around the power leagues.

Against all odds: South Sudan’s daring drive on women’s football | Football

South Sudan gained independence in 2011 and its history is so short that it is a regular low-scoring answer on the popular quiz show Pointless. Much less trivially, for a majority of its existence the country has been in civil war, with peace and a new national unity government in place only from February of this year.

For a country clawing its way back from the devastating effects of a conflict that has seen hundreds of thousands killed and 1.5 million internally displaced, where nearly half of girls are married by 18, child marriages are increasing and sexual violence was used tactically during the war , it would be easy to assume that football, let alone women’s football, would be nonexistent.

Yet on Friday, just over a year after its women’s national team competed for the first time, the South Sudan Football Association launched a four-year strategy for women’s

President Donald Trump awards Medal of Freedom to iconic football coach Lou Holtz

Dec. 3 (UPI) — President Donald Trump presented former Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Thursday, calling him “one of the greatest titans in American football history.”

The ceremony took place in the Oval Office with at least 30 people attending, including Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who hails from one of the states where Holtz coached.

“Wherever Lou went, football glory followed,” Trump said. “He teaches people how to live and how to live properly.”

Holtz, 83, said he’s proud to receive the honor from Trump, the “greatest president in my lifetime.”

This was the 17th time Trump awarded the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor that’s given to those who have made contributions to benefit the security of the United States or national interests, world peace or other cultural endeavors.

“America recognizes Lou Holtz as one of the greatest football coaches

‘Big bold statement’: National Football Museum’s path to gender equality | Suzanne Wrack | Football

‘It’s about changing attitudes,” says Belinda Scarlett, the curator of women’s football at the National Football Museum. “Sometimes the only way you can do that is by making really big bold statements.” Scarlett is talking about the pledge to increase representation of women’s football to 50% of its displays by 2022.

“It’s really pushed the National Football Museum,” she says. “Every time we approach a new project now the question is: ‘How do we make this 50-50?’ That would not have happened a couple of years ago. Even though we’re miles away from it at the moment, we start every conversation with that as a non-negotiable, which is fantastic.”

There is still be a long way to go, but progress has been fast. When the museum moved to Manchester in 2012, Scarlett instigated what she describes as “a cursory attempt” to honour the women’s game.

“ I don’t think

Influential panel proposes separating major college football from the NCAA

An influential leadership group has proposed sweeping changes to the Division I model that would distinguish the Football Bowl Subdivision from the NCAA, transforming the highest level of competition in the sport into a separate entity responsible for its own governance and revenue distribution.

Clemson passes Ohio State in Amway Coaches Poll

The suggestions offered by the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics, which is composed of current and former leaders in education and athletics, include the formation of the National College Football Association, a new governing body outside of the NCAA umbrella.

“Our commission recognizes that far-reaching governance reform will not take place overnight,” said commission co-chair Arne Duncan, the former U.S. Secretary of Education. “At the same time, it believes that discussion on a new governance structure for Division I can, should and must begin immediately.”

From NFL plays to college sports scores, all

Fantasy Football Week 13 Start ‘Em & Sit ‘Em: David Montgomery ready for another big game

In all the years that I’ve been writing this Start ‘Em and Sit ‘Em column, it’s the first time that I’ve been doing it with a game happening. I’m currently watching the Ravens-Steelers game as I’m writing this sentence, and it’s kind of cool. Maybe we’ll get more Wednesday games in the future? Probably not.

While the 2020 season has been wacky because of COVID-19, the good thing is the NFL has been flexible in making sure every game gets played. It hasn’t always been easy, and Fantasy managers have had to juggle a lot of things in setting your lineups. The final stretch of the season will likely have more twists and turns, but we’re near the end. In fact, this is the final week of the regular season in many Fantasy leagues.

Hopefully, this is the week you will clinch a playoff berth or lock up a potential

Fantasy Football Week 13 Running Back Preview: Have backup plans for D’Andre Swift and Josh Jacobs

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

When you look at the projections below or our rankings page you’ll see both Josh Jacobs and D’Andre Swift listed as if they’ll play. We are hopeful they will but practice reports have been a good reminder that’s not yet guaranteed.

Swift was limited on practice on Wednesday and he cleared the concussion protocol, but he still hasn’t been a full participant in team activities yet. Jon Gruden has expressed optimism that Jacobs will be able to play, but Jacobs did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday, and the Raiders signed Spencer Ware as insurance Thursday.

The backup situations in Oakland and Detroit are a mixed bag. Devontae Booker would be close to a must-start running back if Jacobs was out against the Jets. Booker had 83 yards and two scores on 17 touches against the Broncos in Week 10. We’d expect a similar workload, maybe

LSU Football Loses Second Commitment of 2021 Class in Defensive End Naquan Brown

For the second time this week, LSU has lost a commitment from the 2021 class. On Thursday, defensive end Naquan Brown announced that he would be reopening his recruitment process.

Brown’s decommitment from the LSU program leaves the Tigers with 20 players in the 2021 class and five spots left to fill.

“I would like to thank the coaching staff at LSU for offering me to play at the next level,” Brown wrote.

Brown joined defensive tackle Anthony Hundley as the second LSU commit to pull away from the program and consider other options. LSU has plenty of spots to attack its most dire position of need, offensive line.

The Tigers are well positioned to add offensive tackle Tristan Leigh out of Virginia, who’s expected to make his decision on Jan. 2. LSU is also hoping to land defensive linemen Maason Smith and Korey Foreman as well.

“Not everybody’s going
