From a players’ perspective, Bruce Arena was just what the Revolution needed

From his youngest players to some of the club’s most senior members, Revolution coach Bruce Arena has been getting the most out of his talent.

After taking over a 2-8-2 team last May, Arena has the Revolution in the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference final for the first time since 2014, where New England will face the host Columbus Crew at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mapfre Stadium.

On Wednesday, homegrown midfielder Scott Caldwell and second-year defender DeJuan Jones spoke about Arena’s impact on the club.

“Ever since Day One [Arena has] brought a sense of success from his history — something that we can really rely on and learn from,” said Caldwell, who assisted on Charlie Davies’ 70th-minute goal in the 2014 Eastern Conference final.

Juventus investigated over Suarez Italian citizenship test, which showed ‘irregularities’

Juventus are under investigation following irregularities found in an Italian citizenship test Luis Suarez underwent in September.

At the time of the initial investigation on Sept. 22, the Italian finance police chief Selvaggio Sarri had said Juve were not being looked into, but that situation has now changed.

“It emerged that the contents of the test had been communicated in advance to the player, in order to arrive at a predetermined outcome and examination score to meet the requests that had been made by Juventus, with the aim of achieving a positive image return, both personal and for the university,” a statement made on Friday by the Perugia prosecutor’s office read.

“Investigations have also allowed us to understand how, in the first days of September 2020, the management of the Turin club

The conference finals of the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs feature three teams familiar with this stage of the postseason.

The Seattle Sounders, Columbus Crew and New England Revolution have 11 MLS Cup appearances between them, and each of their managers has ended the season with a trophy.

Minnesota United is the new team to this stage. The Loons will make their first Western Conference Final appearance against Seattle on Monday after they defeated top seed Sporting Kansas City 3-0 on Thursday.

Columbus and New England will square off in the Eastern Conference Final on Sunday in what will be one of the final matches at Mapfre Stadium. Columbus is scheduled to move to a new home in 2021.

The Crew and Revolution have been fixtures in the East final throughout MLS’ 25-year history, but this marks just the second time they have faced

Minnesota advances to Western final, beating Sporting KC 3-0

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Kevin Molino scored twice in the first half and Minnesota United advanced to the MLS Western Conference finals, beating Sporting Kansas City 3-0 on Thursday night.

Fourth-seeded Minnesota will play at No. 2 seed Seattle on Monday night for a spot in the MLS Cup finals.

Bakaye Dibassy also scored, and Emanuel Reynoso assists on all three goals.

Molino opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a run up the left side to finish a feed from Reynoso. Eight minutes later, Molino wrapped his right foot around Reynoso’s chip pass with just enough pace to get it past goalkeeper Tim Melia.

Dibassy made it 3-0 with a header to finish Reynoso’s corner in the 39th minute.

Nishikori keen to test himself against the best again

(Reuters) – Japan’s Kei Nishikori hopes to be back on court playing against the best in the world next year after his 2020 season was wrecked by COVID-19 and injury.

Nishikori spent 10 months on the sidelines after undergoing elbow surgery and was slated to return at this year’s U.S. Open but pulled out after testing positive for the novel coronavirus.

He played six tour-level matches before his season was cut short by another injury, this time to his shoulder, in a five-set loss to Italian Stefano Travaglia at the French Open in September.

“We had few tournaments (due to the pandemic) and my season came to an end when I was beginning to get my feel back,” Kyodo news quoted the former world number four as saying on Friday.

Robbie Neilson divulges his plan for January transfer window as he meets Hearts owner Ann Budge to talk new signings

Neilson wants to sign at least one more pacey winger and a new striker for the second half of the season. He will put his proposals to Budge as they aim to finalise their approach for the winter market.

Neilson told the Evening News today that there is no pressing need for Hearts to release a player before adding to their first-team squad, although several youngsters are likely to leave on loan in the weeks ahead.

Eight new players joined Hearts during the summer – goalkeeper Craig Gordon, defenders Mihai Popescu and Stephen Kingsley, midfielder Andy Halliday, plus wingers Elliott Frear and Jordan Roberts. Goalkeeper Ross Stewart and winger Josh Ginnelly also arrived on loan.

Neilson wants reinforcements in wide areas after a number of injuries and also covets another forward to compete with Liam Boyce and Craig Wighton.

MLS conference finals have two favorites, but no underdogs

One thing is clear in the unpredictable minefield that is the MLS Cup playoffs: of the four teams remaining, there may be two distinct favorites, but there are no underdogs left—no matter how many times some coaches want to play that card.

The most prominent “underdog” of the bunch, Minnesota United, made that abundantly clear to complete the conference finals picture on Thursday night, blitzing top-seed Sporting Kansas City out of its own house with a 3-0 win. Its third such result by that score dating back to Decision Day was made possible by a pair of early goal-line clearances and then a first-half attacking masterclass authored by Emanuel “Bebelo” Reynoso (three assists) and Kevin Molino (two goals).

That leaves a pair of matchups to determine who will compete for the 2020 MLS Cup: the Columbus Crew hosting the New England Revolution on Sunday, and the reigning champion Seattle Sounders

Souhan: Reynoso’s toe-tapping magic makes Loons must-see TV

We’re accustomed, in American sports, to celebrating power.

Home runs. Sternum-denting tackles. Slapshots and slammed dunks.

Emanuel Reynoso on Thursday night elevated a franchise with a soft-shoe routine, bringing Minnesota United a 3-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City during an MLS Western Conference semifinal game at Children’s Mercy Park in K.C.

Reynoso, the smallish midfielder from Argentina, produced three first-half assists with a touch so soft it wouldn’t wake a sleeping cat. His Toe Trick came within one assist of tying the MLS record for a full playoff game, and he produced the most important performance in the biggest game in franchise history while wearing No. 10.

This week, Maradona, the Argentine superstar, died at 60. He made No. 10 famous in his home country. Reynoso could make it famous in Minnesota.

“He’s elevated everybody who plays around him,” Loons coach Adrian Heath said. “They love playing with him. We
