Michigan State basketball vs. Detroit Mercy: Scouting report, pick

Tom Izzo was pleased his team won at Duke, but Michigan State basketball’s coach did not think the 12th-ranked Spartans moved the ball well Tuesday.

Detroit Free Press

Two days after a milestone win, his first at Cameron Indoor Stadium in four tries, Tom Izzo returned to his normal self: Equal parts humble, unsatisfied and self-deprecating.

Michigan State basketball’s Hall of Fame coach “wasn’t quite as fired up as everybody else” Thursday after rewatching the 12th-ranked Spartans’ 75-69 win at No. 8 Duke on Tuesday. His in-the-moment glow faded, his demanding side returned.

Because next up for MSU on Friday is its first game in nearly 20 years against Detroit Mercy — a school which handed Izzo three defeats in his first three seasons.

The NCAA tournament selection committee will have perhaps its most challenging assessment ever as a result of this season’s scattered schedules and potentially unbalanced schedules.

Nevertheless, college basketball is back.

Here’s a look at four big-name teams that have struggled through a tough first week.

Maryland men’s basketball tries to plan around schedule uncertainty

Before the season began, Coach Mark Turgeon knew his program needed to have both a schedule and a list of schools he could call if it needed to find a game on short notice. That’s how all teams are operating, with the coronavirus pandemic forcing abrupt cancellations when positive tests emerge in programs. At Maryland, Mark Bialkoski, director of basketball operations, tries to plan around the uncertainty — communicating with other programs and embracing flexibility.

After Monmouth canceled, Maryland scheduled Towson to play on the same date. But the day before the matchup, Towson had to cancel, too. Turgeon said his staff talked to around 15 or 20 schools, looking for a new opponent. The Terps landed on a road game against James Madison this Saturday.

On Wednesday, George Mason canceled its Friday game at Maryland after a person in the Patriots’ program tested positive for the virus. This time,

Coaching can wait: Rondo plots future, but stays in present | Basketball

ATLANTA (AP) — Rajon Rondo is planning for a future in coaching.

Maybe he’ll get a shot as as a general manager.

Not that he’s ready to get started on those career goals just yet.

After capturing his second NBA championship ring with the Lakers, the 34-year-old Rondo has moved on to the youthful Atlanta Hawks, where he will serve as a mentor to budding superstar Trae Young while providing valuable minutes off the bench for one of the league’s more intriguing teams.

For the first time in his long career, Rondo is the oldest guy on the team.

“It’s kind of weird to look at the roster and I’m the oldest date on the sheet,” he said with a smile. “But it’s a natural fit as far as mentoring these young guys. So many great veterans helped me become the player I am today. It’s only right to give

Jim Boeheim explains how Syracuse was able to play a basketball game after positive Covid test

Syracuse, N.Y. – Syracuse played a men’s basketball game against Niagara on Thursday night in the Carrier Dome. But neither Buddy Boeheim nor four other players were allowed to participate. One of them tested positive for Covid-19 last week; the others were considered close contacts and will need to quarantine for 14 days.

In his postgame remarks, SU coach Jim Boeheim characterized the person who tested positive as an SU walk-on. The university does not publicly identify players who test positive for Covid.

The last time a player and Jim Boeheim registered positive tests, the Orange was required to pause its basketball program while the positive cases spent 10 days in isolation and everybody else served a 14-day quarantine. This time, SU was able to use data collected from its wearable, wristwatch-like devices to convince Onondaga County Health Department officials to direct into quarantine only the people identified by the
