Tottenham, AC Milan reach knockout stage of Europa League

Associated Press (AP) — AC Milan came from two goals down to beat Celtic 4-2 on Thursday and qualify for the Europa League’s knockout stage, while Tottenham advanced despite giving up a late equalizer.

Gareth Bale scored his first Europa League goal since returning to Tottenham from Real Madrid in the London club’s 3-3 draw at Austria’s LASK, which was enough to advance from Group J.

Another 12 teams made it through as Braga, Lille, Villarreal, Royal Antwerp, Dinamo Zagreb, Red Star Belgrade, Leverkusen, Slavia Prague, Rangers, Benfica, Granada and PSV Eindhoven all advanced with a game to spare.

Fans returned to a European football game in England for the first time since March when Arsenal hosted Rapid Vienna.

Arsenal hasn’t won a Premier League game since Nov. 1 but is the last team to keep a perfect record in Europe’s second-tier competitions after a 4-1 victory.

The Premier League’s protocol for the return of up to 2,000 fans to 10 of their 20 venues makes clear that even though sitting outdoors does not require a face mask in the UK, fans will have to cover up inside stadiums.

Fans from the same household will be able to sit together but all other supporters will have to spread out in line with a social-distancing seating plan.

Premier League approves $330M bailout to lower-division clubs

LONDON (AP) — The Premier League agreed to a rescue package Thursday worth 250 million pounds ($330 million) to ease the financial burden on lower-division teams in English soccer as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

After months of negotiations, Premier League clubs gave their approval for a loan of 200 million pounds ($265 million) that second-division Championship clubs will be able to utilize interest free.

A fund of 50 million pounds ($65 million) will go to clubs in League One and League Two — the third and fourth divisions.

“Our commitment is that no English Football League club need go out of business due to COVID-19,” said Premier League chief executive Richard Masters, noting the importance of the lower-division clubs to their communities.

The Premier League has committed to cover up to 15 million pounds ($20 million) in interest and arrangement fees to enable the loan to be secured

Man Utd’s Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rues missed chances in Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was left to rue missed opportunities as Manchester United failed to take the chance to book their place in the Champions League last 16.

Two goals from Neymar either side of Marquinhos’ third Champions League goal since the competition resumed in August handed Paris Saint-Germain a 3-1 win at Old Trafford.

In a thrilling contest, Marcus Rashford had cancelled out Neymar’s opener, with the forward scoring for a third straight Champions League match against PSG, becoming only the second Englishman to net six goals in a group-stage campaign, behind Tottenham star Harry Kane.

Rashford’s strike, which took a wicked deflection off Danilo Pereira, was one of 12 attempts United managed in total – one less than PSG’s tally – though the hosts could only get five on target.

Anthony Martial was guilty of a glaring miss early in the second half before PSG’s record goalscorer Edinson Cavani
